Louise Bourgeois (born April 28, 1911–June 1, 2010) was a French artist who worked with a variety of materials, including wood, paper, metals, and stone. Bourgeois is best known for her large-scale sculpture made of metal or stone. She was born in Paris at La Poudrière, the family home near the Champs-Élysées. Her father was an engineer who designed bridges and waterworks for Paris
Bourgeois was an only child and spent much of her childhood exploring nature with her parents. She attended several private schools in Paris between the ages of seven and fourteen years old before studying at the Académie Colarossi in Paris from 1914 to 1929. While there she met artists such as André Mare and Sonia Delaunay.
